John Perkins is a self-confessed economic hitman, reformed and repentant. From 1971 to 1981 he was employed as an economist by consulting firm, Chas T Main. His job? To structure huge international loans to Third World countries (in Perkins’ case: Indonesia, Panama and Saudi Arabia), loans for massive construction projects that would in due course funnel the money back to US contractors, enriching the ruling elite at the cost of national self-sufficiency, independence and endemic poverty for the vast majority of the local population. By this means, Perkins asserts, the US has turned the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund into tools of Empire. His revelations don’t stop there. Perkins promises that Economics--not Intelligence--is where the real cloak-and-dagger stuff happens.
Award-winning journalist and filmmaker Stelios Kouloglou fashions Perkins’ controversial best-seller into a provocative and fascinating film noir documentary, complete with smoky backroom liaisons, corruption, blackmail and murder. Apology of an Economic Hit Man Official Selection at the 27th Vancouver International Film Festival, which will take place from September 25 - October 9, 2008 in Vancouver, BC Canada.
Our documentary will hold its Canadian Premiere on Friday, September 26th @ 7:15pm, Sunday September 28th @ 2:15pm and Thursday, October 9th @ 7:15pm at the Empire Granville 7 Theater 6. It is also 1 of 14 films participating in the Nonfiction Feature competition at the Film Festival.

Synopsis:
John Perkins was a prominent member of the top-secret team of “economic hit men”, who used fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, military coups and murder to create the global American empire after World War II. After a long internal struggle between his guilt and the fear of telling the truth, Perkins meets the daughter of an assassinated president and speaks out in front of an angry Latin-American audience.

We are very pleased to announce that the final version of “Apology of an Economic Hit Man” has been selected to participate at the 61st Locarno International Film Festival, which will take place from the 6th to the 16th of August, 2008, in Locarno, Switzerland.
Our documentary will hold its European Premiere on August 12 and 13, participating in the Semaine de la Critique (Critics’ Week) section of the Film Festival.

The documentation of those taking the remedy will soon begin. They are from the United States and have agreed to share their stories and progress with medical personnel and our film. As soon as available, their stories will be included into the trailer which can also be seen at the official Jungle Remedy website.
