Synopsis
CHEEKS focuses on the psyche troubles of a southern New Jersey family,
that from the outside appears to be completely normal. The film elegantly
unveils the complex and disturbed family dynamics of a paranoid schizophrenic
father, a
manic-depressive mother in relation to religion, music, dysfunctional
relationships, suicide attempts,” secret societies” and
their only son who wants out.

Director’s Statement:
CHEEKS is not out to judge or exploit this unique family situation
but to explore the power of a family as a structure and its dynamics
under these circumstances. The photographic style played a significant
part in order to introduce the characters and to create the internal
mood and environment that we captured during the principal photography
process. The film strays away from the traditional documentary style
by involving the camera that would translates the emotional state
of mind of the family through cinematic tools. An equal significant
part was to employ the musical elements, which serves the family
an emotional escape. It was key to record and utilize the Cheeks
music not only as a score, but also as dialogue.
